A loan of $10,000 helps a St. Louis-based beauty tech startup develop an AI-powered marketplace to meet customers' demands.

Tashara's story
Shopping for beauty products was frustrating because I could never find anything that matched my skin tone. As a result, I struggled with low self-esteem, which shook my confidence and affected both my well-being and career path. But I didn’t let this stop me. As I searched deeper into the issue, I discovered that many people faced the same problem and deserved a better way to shop for beauty products online and in-store.
As a child, I spent time in my family’s beauty salon, where I was first inspired to become a cosmetologist and business owner. In 2007, I earned my cosmetology license and began practicing hairdressing and makeup while attending college in Springfield, MO. I also sold Mary Kay and Avon products and hosted private makeup parties for clients. Over time, I pursued higher education, earning dual bachelor’s degrees in Entertainment Management and Entrepreneurship from Missouri State University, and later an MBA and an MA in Media Communications from Webster University. With 15+ years of cosmetology experience, I have always combined my love for beauty and business with a passion for innovation.
Growing up in the Baden neighborhood of St. Louis, an underserved community, shaped my determination to pursue entrepreneurship and creativity. These experiences ultimately led me to launch Shades of Color Beauty—a platform designed to disrupt the beauty industry and ensure all shades of color are seen, supported, and celebrated.
