A loan of $11,500 helps a veteran expand her coffee business that supports direct trade with community impact.

Gina's story
I’m a U.S. Army veteran and first-generation Colombian-American, and Summit Grounds is more than just a coffee brand, it’s a way to reconnect with my roots, serve my community, and give back to both the land and the people that shaped me. During the pandemic, I rediscovered a forgotten coffee farm in the mountains of Mesitas del Colegio that my grandfather had planted years ago. That moment sparked something in me. I saw an opportunity to preserve his legacy, support small coffee farmers in Colombia, and build something meaningful.
I started Summit Grounds to bridge the gap between small producers and conscious coffee drinkers. We work directly with farmers to ensure they’re paid fairly and recognized for their craft. We roast in small batches locally and sell our coffee through community events and pop-ups, which have allowed us to share stories behind each cup while connecting with people in Charleston, South Carolina.
What drives me is purpose. I’ve seen the power of community, and I believe business can be a tool for social good. Summit Grounds now partners with a local nonprofit that supports veterans, and a portion of our proceeds goes to help fellow servicemembers heal and thrive after service. I’m proud to say that every bag of coffee we sell is traceable, ethically sourced, and roasted with intention.
Our partner farms use sustainable practices and are committed to zero child labor. It matters deeply to us that our coffee is not only high-quality but also responsibly grown.
This loan will help us purchase inventory, upgrade our equipment, and continue expanding our pop-up events. More than anything, it will help me keep building a bridge from my grandfather’s farm in Colombia to a community of people here in the U.S. who believe in better coffee and better futures.
